What You’ll Learn
The primary objective of the Homeland Security program is to prepare students for the exciting field of safety, security, and disaster management. Through earning an Associate Degree in Homeland Security, students will develop the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to protect people, information, and locations on a local and national level.
An Associate Degree in Homeland Security can be earned online, with coursework available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and accessible from any location.
Students will explore and analyze a wide variety of current security issues with practical use geared towards local, state, and national safety. You will learn the fundamentals of homeland security through courses in:

In these courses, you will investigate real-case scenarios that have shaped and impacted the way we view and implement homeland security. ICDC College will even facilitate your firearms and baton course, guard card, and chemical agents permit training*.
ICDC College also offers its students an employment preparation course prior to graduation to assist with finding employment, preparing a strong résumé, effective interviewing techniques, and “dress for success” workshops.

Students who graduate with a Homeland Security Associate’s Degree from ICDC College will be trained in the areas of homeland security, criminal justice, emergency response and management, and terrorism. Work environments may include private security, loss prevention, public safety, and emergency management.

Graduates may qualify for entry-level employment in the following types of positions:
Transportation Security Screener: In this role, you will protect passengers in airports and on aircrafts. Security screenings may include hand-waving security wand, pat-down searches, monitoring metal detector equipment, and operation x-ray machine to identify dangerous objects in baggage. You will be required to use these tools properly to help travelers be safe and feel at ease.
Safety Security Officer: In this capacity, you would monitor and maintain security systems and closed circuit televisions. Duties might include observing daily office procedures and traffic to and from the building, assessing any harm or threat to the building or its employees.
Loss Prevention Agent: As an agent, you would enforce loss-prevention procedures by maintaining physical security to retail stores and markets. Duties might include ensuring all alarms and closed circuit televisions are functioning properly, as well as monitoring the daily activities of the store. In this role you would work closely with loss-prevention managers to investigate theft and discuss proactive plans to increase surveillance.
Security Officer: In this role, you would be the first line of support in situations of injury or emergency. Your duties would include patrolling and reporting misconduct of any sort. Your presence would ensure that security and safety concerns are handled or reported properly. Security Officers provide a professional and secure working environment for public or private businesses.
The Homeland Security Associate Degree program is only available online.

Based on the state in which you choose to seek employment, potential requirements of state agencies and employers may include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Pass a state exam, if applicable
- Pass a drug test, if applicable
- Possess a high school diploma or GED, if applicable
- Submit to a background check, including criminal convictions/parole history

Failing to meet the minimum requirements in the state in which you choose to seek employment, and any previous misdemeanor convictions or periods on parole, will diminish or prohibit your opportunities for employment in this field. Further, any previous felony convictions will most probably prohibit employment in this field.
